ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Army forces in Alaska have a new chief of staff.

Col. Richard Nickerson has begun his new post at Fort Richardson. As chief of staff, he oversees staff activities and sets policy.

The appointment of Nickerson, 51, stems from a five-month assignment as the Alaska Army National Guard's senior advisor.

During his 29-year career with the Army, Nickerson has served overseas in Okinawa and Korea. His domestic duties have taken him to Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Fort Carson in Colorado and the Pentagon.
