FAIRBANKS (AP) -- An Anchorage lawyer who worked as a congressional aide 20 years ago has been picked by Sen. Lisa Murkowski to serve as her chief counsel and legislative director.

Jon DeVore, 48, will oversee all legislation in Murkowski's office. He worked in the early 1980s for Murkowski's father, Frank, and for U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens before that.

Since 1989, DeVore has been an attorney for the U.S. Small Business Administration in Anchorage.

Prior to that, he worked for the Bristol Bay Native Corp., based in Anchorage, and for an Anchorage law firm. He got his law degree in 1986.

DeVore was a senior legislative assistant for the elder Murkowski from 1981 to 1983. He also served as a staff assistant to Stevens from 1976 to 1981.

''He has extensive experience in natural resource and economic development issues and is also an expert in Native affairs,'' Sen. Lisa Murkowski said in a statement.

DeVore, the son of United Methodist missionaries, grew up in Nome, Anchorage and Fairbanks, where he graduated from Lathrop High School in 1973. He also has lived in Juneau.

DeVore and his wife, Michele, have four children.
