Kardinals girls take title at GCI Invitational

Posted: Sunday, February 23, 2003

The Kenai Central High School girls basketball team defeated Bethel 40-21 Saturday to take first place in the GCI Invitational tournament in Bethel.

The Kardinals finished the round-robin tournament with a 3-0 mark. Sarah McLeod and Erin Smith were named to the all-tournament team.

The Kenai boys found themselves in foul trouble, and a tight game got out of hand as three Kardinals fouled out in a 54-38 loss to the host Warriors. The Kardinals finished the tournament tied with Bethel and Unalakleet with 2-1 record, but the point differential tie breaker relegated Kenai to third place. Ian Foley and Steve Steiner were named to the all-tournament team and also swept the skills competition. Steiner hit 19 of 20 free throws to win that title, while Foley was the hot shot champion.

Against Bethel, the Kenai girls steadily built a lead. Smith scored 15 points for the Kardinals while Dallas Baldwin netted seven and McLeod netted six.

The Kenai boys trailed Bethel by two points, 32-30, at the end of the third quarter. Steiner was whistled for four early fouls, though, and picked up his fifth in the second half. Dakota Craig and Caleb Schooley also fouled out of the game, and the Warriors took advantage with a 22-8 third quarter. Bethel hit 11 of 14 foul shots in the final frame.

Foley led the Kardinals with 12 points while Dean Shinn netted nine.
