CIA posts sweep of Lumen Christi

Posted: Sunday, February 23, 2003

The Cook Inlet Academy high school basketball teams chose an excellent way to celebrate senior night Friday, notching a pair of District 3/2A wins over visiting Lumen Christi.

The Cook Inlet boys ran away from the Archangels for a 69-33 win while the CIA girls also rolled, putting together a 44-23 victory.

"This is a good team. They've been beating a lot of teams in our region," CIA's Luke Myers said of the Archangels. "We just wanted it tonight. We came out with fire and intensity. We were loose -- I guess we played up to our potential."

Indeed, the Eagles were hitting on all cylinders right out of the gate. The Eagles traded two-point baskets with the Archangels on each team's first possession of the game. Lumen Christi also scored two on its second possession, but after that, it was all Eagles as Myers hit his first of five 3-pointers, sparking a 21-5 run by the Eagles to close out the quarter.

While the Eagles' offensive barrage was impressive, everything started with defense, where CIA denied the Archangels any good looks at the basket and came up with steal after steal, leading to easy baskets.

"When we were able to get in the open court, that opened things up," said CIA's Jacob Peterson.

"That's what we've been trying to do all year, play hard on defense with intensity," Myers said. "Our press seemed to be bothering them. They have good guards that like to drive, but our press was denying them from getting into the paint."

The Eagles were hot from the perimeter, finishing with 10 3-pointers. In addition to Myers' five treys, Kyle Nettles hit three and Kohei Oguro sunk a pair from beyond the arc.

The Cook Inlet Academy girls also had a hot shooting night as Mandy Evans struck for 24 points to lead the Eagles.

The Eagles steadily built their lead against the Archangels, forcing turnovers on defense while hitting perimeter shots on offense to loosen up Lumen Christi's zone.

"Our offense went really well," Evans said. "We had a lot of nice shots."

"I was happy," CIA coach Greg Bell said of his team's effort. "We knew they had some big girls and played that zone, so we worked all week on reversing the ball and hitting the outside shots. We did that, and played pretty good defense.

"We made them turn the ball over, and we didn't turn the ball over too much."
