Former peninsula resident Kristen Elaine Kirk died Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. She was 43.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the First United Methodist Church in Anchorage. Rev. Doug Lindsay will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will include Darlene Antila, Cassie Duffin, Arlette Kubanyi, Lori Moore-DeStefano, Sandra Na’o, Crystal Roach and Calee Robison. A reception will be held after the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

Ms. Kirk was born June 6, 1963, in Anchorage to Francis X. Wirth Jr. and Sophie (Ondola) Gutierrez. She graduated from Service High School in 1981. She was raised in Anchorage and also attended school in Fairbanks and Kenai. She was an original Cook Inlet Region, Inc., shareholder. She attended Kenai Peninsula College and Alaska Computer Institute and graduated with an accounting degree.

She married Cecil Kirk and together they had two sons, Lewis and Eric.

“Kristen enjoyed reading, snowmobiling, horseback riding, knitting, computers and being with friends and family. Kristen had a very close relationship with her sons, sisters and parents. She was especially close to her uncles, Roy and Carl Ondola, aunt, Gina Ondola and cousin, Theresa Hartman. She never ended a telephone conversation without saying ‘I love you.’ Kristen was at her best with her friends and acquaintances. She was empathetic and very caring and always willing to lend a helping hand. She fought cancer with grace and dignity and never complained,” her family said.

She was preceded in death by her father; aunt, Marie Rosenberg; cousins, John Rosenberg, Russell Ondola, George Ondola Jr. and Wayne Cook; grand-nephew Baby Jack; maternal grandparents, John and Olga Ondola; paternal grandparents, Francis and Eleanor Wirth, Sr.

She is survived by her sons, Lewis and Eric Kirk; fiance, Glenn “Randy” Steed; mother and step-father, Sophie and Gilbert Gutierrez; sisters, Rita Hemphill, Cecelia Richard and Kaylene Shook; aunts, Gina Ondola, Dorothy Cook, Sally Ann Drussell, Susie Ondola, Cecilia White and Jackie Peterson; uncles, Roy Ondola, Carl Ondola, Jerry Ondola, George Ondola and Gilbert Rosenberg; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society. Friends who would like to send condolences may mail them to P.O. Box 34, Glennallen, AK 99588.

Arrangements were made by Witzleben Funeral Home and Crematory in Anchorage.
