Kenai’s Semmens finishes 18th, Soldotna’s Clock places 23rd at state competition

Mucha takes 8th in freestyle race

Posted: Friday, February 23, 2007

Soldotna’s Kailey Mucha lived up to her much-anticipated state debut in the Nordic Ski Championships, placing eighth in Thursday’s 7.5-kilometer mass start freestyle race at Kincaid Park in Anchorage.

After dominating most of the season and capturing the Region III crown last weekend, Mucha was expected to place high at state despite being a freshman.

And she didn’t disappoint.

Mucha crossed the finish line only 23.1 seconds after South’s Caitlin Patterson, who barely edged West Valley’s Becca Rorabaugh by 0.1 seconds for first place.

Every Kenai Peninsula coach believed the phenom from SoHi was capable of finishing the competition in the top 10, with a few boldly predicting even better results.

“I think that the top five isn’t out of reach for her,” Stars’ coach Dan Harbison said Wednesday on his way to the meet.

With a solid performance in today’s 5-kilometer classical race, that prediction is within her grasp.

The boys’ 10-kilometer race also was tight, with Patrick Johnson, of Service, nipping West’s Lex Treinen by 0.6 seconds.

One year after placing 20th at state, Kenai junior Trent Semmens finished in 29:10.2, which was good for 18th place. His senior teammate and regional fifth-place finisher Chris Hall placed 67th in 33:28.4 after finishing 21st last season.

Skyview senior Erick Romig placed 28th (29:57.3) with Cook Inlet Academy’s Lars Arneson finishing 29th (29:59).

Another Soldotna freshman, Jasmine Clock, finished in 23rd place, after placing fifth at the region meet.

The highly touted Homer girls’ squad, expected to finish anywhere inside the top 10, finished the day in ninth place after Claire Laukitis took 27th, Erika Klaar finished 37th and Emma Laukitis placed 44th.

Also chasing high finishes were the Skyview and Kenai boys, who finished eighth and 10th, respectively.

After Romig, the Panthers saw Taylor Karnikis finish 41st, Tommy Honer take 45th and Kelly Skipwith place 48th.

Kenai freshman Anders Nyquist skied to an impressive 43rd-place standing with DC Reid crossing 56th.

Today’s competition begins when the boys compete in the 7.5-kilometer classical race at 1 p.m. and the girls hit the trails for their 5-kilometer classical race at 2:15 p.m.

On Saturday, the girls 4x3-kilometer classic-classic-free-free relay is slated to start at 11 a.m. with the boys 4x5-kilometer classic-classic-free-free relay following at 12:30 p.m.
