Homer girls third after state skiing's first day

Posted: Friday, February 25, 2000

The Homer girls, led by Syverine Abrahamson's fourth-place standing, finished the first day of the three-day state cross-country ski championships at Kincaid Park in Anchorage in third place.

On the boys side, Soldotna, behind top peninsula finisher Brandon Newbould, skated to a fifth-place finish.

Abrahamson skated the 7.5-kilometer girls race in 25 minutes, 4.8 seconds. Service's Tara Hamilton, the state's Skimeister the past two years, flew around the course in 23:50.6 to take first place. East's Kikkan Randall was second at 23:54.4.

The Service girls, who have taken three of the past four state titles, had their four fastest skiers roll up a total time of 1:39:47.7 to take more than a two-minute lead on runner-up East. Homer checked in at 1:45:58.5.

Other Homer girls contributing to the top-three standing were Ida Martin (11th), Jasmine Fry (23rd) and Sydney Schoepke (27th). The other peninsula girl to crack the top 20 was Skyview's Amy Lambe (12th).

The Soldotna girls were the next peninsula girls team in line at 10th, while Skyview grabbed 12th, Kenai picked up 13th, Seward nabbed 15th and Nikiski chalked up a 16th-place finish.

Newbould skated 10 kilometers in 29:09.9 to pace peninsula finishers, while Colony's Eric Strabel, a two-time state Skimeister, left all challengers in the dust by at least 40 seconds with his 27:07.9.

Despite Strabel's blistering time, Colony's string of three straight team titles is in definite peril. Service was leading the pack with a total time of 1:56:25.1, while the Knights sat back in fourth place at 2:01:31.9.

Besides Newbould, Andy Liebner (16th), Brent Knight (31st) and Daniel Harro (52nd) contributed to Soldotna's fifth-place standing. The only other peninsula skier in the top 20 was Nikiski's Zach Hall (17th).

The Skyview boys cracked the top 10 with a ninth-place finish, while Homer stood in 11th, Kenai rested in 13th and Seward sat in 14th.
