Chris Mabeus, a pitcher with the Oilers for the past two seasons, has started off the 2000 college season with a pair of wins in two relief appearances. The Soldotna High School grad, slated to join the Oilers this summer for his third season of Alaska Baseball League action, has not allowed a run and has struck out four while walking two in seven innings of work for Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho.
Mabeus was a 37th-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox in 1999 and again is eligible for the Major League draft in June.
Danny Garcia, an infielder and outfielder at Pepperdine University, has started the 2000 college season right where he left off with the 1999 Oilers. Garcia led the Oilers in most offensive categories last season and is hitting .400 after nine games with the Waves. Garcia will be back this summer for his second season with the Oilers.
Jeremy Dodson, a member of the 1997 Oilers, has been invited to spring training as a nonroster player after just one season in the Kansas City Royals farm system. Dodson holds the Oilers all-time single-season record for home runs with 14, and trails only 1975, 76 and 77 Oiler Mike Hilderbrandts 15 dingers on the all-time career list.
For information on joining the Oilers organization as a fan, sponsor, or member of the board of directors, stop by the Oilers office on the corner of Cook and Main Streets in Kenai or call 283-7133.
