Felicidad 'Phyllis' (Purugganan) Kahakauwila

Longtime Kenai resident Felicidad "Phyllis" (Purugganan) Kahakauwila died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna. She was 74.

A memorial Mass will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Kenai. Father LeRoy Clementich, CSC, will officiate at the service. A reception will immediately follow the service. She will be laid to rest at home in Maui in the fall.

Mrs. Kahakauwila was born Sept. 18, 1929, in Wailuku, Maui. She moved to Alaska in 1978, residing in Kenai.

She was a member of the Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Kenai and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary No. 20. She also enjoyed baking.

"Her son Myron 'Tony' will always remember spending time together doing her favorite past time, bingo. Her daughter Rachelle 'Denise' will always treasure her mother as her best friend, her confidant, the core of her existence and always loved all the time they laughed together. Her daughter Roxanna 'Rocky' says she will always be thankful for having a mother who loved and cherished her grandchildren with so much affection," her family said.

Mrs. Kahakauwila was preceded in death by her parents, Marcelino and Rozela Purugganan; son, Benjamin Piring; and granddaughter, Bethany Crawford.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Kahakauwila of Kenai; daughter-in-law, Lea Piring of Chandler, Ariz.; daughters and sons-in-law, Roxanna and Daniel Winters of Kenai and Rachelle and Edward Brehm of Anchorage; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Rhonda Crawford of Kenai; sisters and brothers-in-law, Clara and Nolan Cole of Oahu, Ann and Carl Smith of Maui and Gloria and Kazuto Yamaguchi of Maui; brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Nani Purugganan of Kenai and Frank and Leone Purugganan of Maui; uncle and aunt, Antonio and Pat Purugganan of Maui; uncle, Eslao Magsayo of Maui; and grandchildren, Rachel, Sarah, Nicholas, Samuel, Emerson, Ashley, Tiffany, Carolee, Anthony, Nick, Kyra and Sophie.
