Soldotna Montessori Charter

Posted: Wednesday, February 25, 2004

Mrs. Overturf's kindergarten class visited Mrs. Sotelo's class for a rock festival Monday. The older students helped the kindergartners rotate through four activities involving rocks. Students were able to sift for fossils, classify rocks, make fossil jewelry and have their pictures taken with a 500-million-year-old trilobite. These activities coordinated with the kindergarten study of the earth and space.

Mrs. Larned's first- through third-grade class is busy with its Asia studies. Each student is creating an island in their choice of Asia locations. Students will decide if their island has mountains, rivers, deserts, tropical forests, temperate forests or grasslands. They will figure out which animals might live there, what the people's shelters might look like and how the inhabitants will meet their basic needs.

The school will conduct an enrollment lottery March 27. Applications and copies of the enrollment and lottery procedures are available at the school from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The school is in the 400 wing of Soldotna Elementary School at 162 Park Ave., Soldotna. All applications for the 2004-05 school year must be delivered in person to the school no later than 4 p.m. March 12. The lottery results will be posted at the school April 6.

Orientations for anyone interested in learning more about Montessori education will be from 4 to 5 p.m. today and March 3 at the school.
