I love the concept of leap year, the thought that we all have an extra day once every four years.

I have had a keen awareness recently of the value of time. I usually find myself trying to wedge those important things, such as telling someone close to you that you love them, finding the time for a call to a friend you haven't talked to in a while, giving a kid a hug, in to a few spare minutes. Having a whole extra day seems like a wealth of riches. Think of that on Friday. How will you spend that extra time?

I told you a few weeks ago that Ami McLelland is our newest BIRCH Americorps member working here in Sterling. She will split her time between Sterling Elementary School and the Sterling Head Start, but she hopes she will be able to impact folks of all ages. Her focus is health and wellness issues and their effect on our community.

One of Ami's first projects is coordinating an after school program at our school. It will run from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays beginning March 3 through May 19.

Volunteers are needed to help tutor children in grades kindergarten through sixth. There also is a need for folks who are willing to help supervise open gym activities once homework is completed. Volunteers will be asked to sign in each Monday. Volunteer duties may include helping with reading, writing and math homework; helping students solve conflicts; and supervising students to ensure that they are playing safely during open gym times. Ami also has tentative plans for a health fair to be held at the school in May. If you have any ideas for summer programs you would like to see in Sterling, or if you are willing to volunteer, give Ami a call at 262-4944, Ext. 4239.

I told you last week about the Take Off Pounds Sensibly, (TOPS) group that meets here in Sterling. I wanted to remind you that Wednesday is the last time the group will meet at the school. Meetings will still be every Wednesday night. Weigh-in is from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. and the meeting starts at 6 p.m. Starting on March 5 meetings will be held at the Sterling Fire Station. If you have any questions about TOPS, you can call Cathy Patterson at 260-7606.

Happy birthday wishes go out to Don Watowa on Feb. 26; Helen Olson on Feb. 27; Joe Bazan Feb. 28; and a special Leap Year happy birthday to David Gilbertson on Feb. 29.

The school is looking for volunteers to help with the Borough forensics meet. It will be held March 8. f you are interested in helping at this event, call Krissy Mahan at 262-4944.Senior activities planned
