Sports Lake resident Nita Ross, 84, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at her residence on Ross Drive in Ridgeway with her family present.
Memorial services will be Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, 5 p.m., at Kenai Grace Brethren Church, 406 McCollum Dr., in Kenai.
Mrs. Ross was born Sept. 24, 1926, to Byron and Nimma Gott, in Ridgeway, Colo. Her parents died when she was 2 years old and she was raised in Indiana and Michigan in several family members' homes until she moved to California to be with her brothers, when she was 13. In December 1945, she married Robert Ross in Redbluff, Calif.
In 1950, she moved to Alaska with her husband, living in the Wasilla area and road construction camps in Cantwell, Tok and Glenallen before moving to Anchorage and then to Soldotna in 1963.
"Mrs. Ross was a fabulous homemaker who also worked in her husband's businesses. She served for many years on local election boards. She was known for both her kindness and independent nature. She always made the best home possible for her family in whatever circumstances she found herself, whether living in tents, small cabins without any utilities or her present family home," her family wrote.
Mrs. Ross was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Bob," daughter, Nita Conrad, and brothers, Les and Dwight Gott.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Gayle Ross, Byron and Tina Ross and Dwight Ross; daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Steve Toliver, all of the Central Peninsula; grandchildren, Robert and Elizabeth Ross, David and Lara Ross, Raymond and Mariah Ross, Flerron Ross, Dann and Erin Toliver, Kevin Toliver, Katie Toliver, Jeni and Mark Davis and Brian and Amie Conrad; and great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Cassie, Jacey, Taylor, Rachael, Madelyn, Bladen, Sytaras, Adelynn, Zachary, Jayla and Eliana.
Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
