ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A crewman on the Coast Guard cutter Storis was medevaced from Sand Point to Seattle Sunday after he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Seaman Kurt Gunckel, on the cutter's law enforcement boarding team, was preparing a 9 mm pistol when the mishap occurred. The Coast Guard command center received a call reporting the accident at about 10:30 a.m., said Lt. Stacie Fain.

The pistol accidentally discharged while Gunckel was loading it for boarding. The team was preparing for a routine law enforcement check of domestic fishing vessels, said Chief Petty Officer Marshalena Delaney.

Gunckel was hit in the right thigh.

An ambulance transported Gunckel from the cutter, still docked in Sand Point when the accident occurred, to the Sand Point clinic. From there he was flown to Cold Bay. A second medevac flew him to Seattle, where he underwent surgery to remove the bullet.
