Seward's Smith 53rd at championships

Aubrey Smith, a graduate of Seward high school, finished 53rd in a 10-kilometer skiathlon Saturday at the Nordic world championships in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

In the skiathlon, racers ski 5 kilometers using the classical style, change to skate skis at a pit area, then ski 5 kilometers using the freestyle technique. Smith had the fastest transition time of any U.S. skier in the pit area, taking just 6.1 seconds for the changeover.

The winner of the race was Estonia's Kristina Smigun, who finished with a time of 26 minutes, 38.4 seconds. Smith was timed at 29:35.5. Other U.S. finishers were Wendy Wagner of the Alaska Pacific University Nordic Program in 44th, Anchorage's Kikkan Randall of the APU program in 54th and Fairbanks' Aelin Peterson in 63rd.
