Kids show enthusiasm for reading

I wouldlike to express my thanks to all those who helped make Battle of the Books such a success at Mountain View Elementary. Although our fifth-graders did not place in the top four (we placed eighth out of 22 schools), I was very impressed with the students' dedication. Each child read all or most of the 13 books, came to practices daily the last few weeks and showed true sportsmanship, winning or losing.

Many thanks to the PTA who donated two sets of books and paid for the Battle of the Books T-shirts, which the students wear proudly.

Thanks also to those parents and volunteers who made Battle Day possible. Mary Estes acted as the moderator; Dena Cunningham was scorer; Jamie Gabriel was timekeeper. In addition, Dena Cunningham and Mark Murrieta worked with my fifth-graders when I was gone for a week. Without all these helpers, Battle of the Books would not be so successful!

Students are already talking about readingnext year's books this summer in anticipation of next year's battle. It is a real pleasure to see such

enthusiasm for reading!
