Knights blacken Soldotna

Posted: Sunday, February 27, 2000

The Soldotna High School boys basketball team went blow for blow with Colony Friday in a Region III/4A contest, but the Knights galloped away in the third quarter for a 63-44 win.

The Stars fell behind 7-0 in the opening minutes and didn't get on the board until just 2:04 remained in the first quarter, but Soldotna made up the difference quickly.

Paul John Zobeck scored the first Soldotna bucket off a baseline drive, Mike Metteer hit a 3-pointer and Shaun Williams hit a jumper in the lane to tie it up before the first buzzer.

The Stars matched the Knights through the second quarter, and the teams went to the locker room tied at 21 at the half.

"We wanted the fast pace," said Soldotna's Sean Kelley. "We used a lot of different defenses to change it up."

Colony outscored the Stars 20-8 in the third quarter, though.

"In the first half, we were making our shots and playing better defense," Kelley said. "We missed a few shots in the second half. It's pretty much all shooting."

"We didn't control the ball as well," said Soldotna's Chet Nettles. "We turned the ball over in the second half. We need to get more rebounds, and we need to box out better."

The Stars made a run at the Knights in the final quarter, pulling to within 10 (49-39) with under five minutes to play. Kelley hit a 3-pointer and then came up with a steal on a Colony inbound play to feed Williams for two.

Zobeck added a pair of foul shots and Nick Christensen hit a trey with under a minute to play, but the hole proved to be too big for the Stars to climb out of.

"We're happy with the effort, and the defense was pretty good," Kelley said. "We've got to work on our shooting. Hopefully, we'll see them again in regions."

The Stars were able to stay with the Knights in the early going, giving them some things to build on as the season progresses.

"It was challenge going up against a ranked team," said Soldotna's Jennifer Sennette. "We haven't played that many teams with that much skill. It will make us better. We weren't upset with how we played."

The Stars kept it close through the first quarter, denying Colony easy baskets from the paint with aggressive defense.

The Knights went up by 11 at the half, and started finding 6-foot-3 Jessica Moore with lob passes into the post for points in the third quarter.

The iron was unkind to the Stars at the other end of the floor, though, and several good shots rimmed out, allowing the Knights to widen the gap.

"Those will fall -- that's something we can work on," Sennette said. "We've got the heart. That's something a coach can't teach you. That's what I like about our team. We never give up."
