FAIRBANKS (AP) -- The body of a snowmachiner missing for two days was found Monday near the North Slope village of Atqasak, Alaska State Troopers said.
A helicopter spotted the body of Luke Kagak, 53, about 17 miles north of his home in Atqasak. Kagak apparently hit a bump while riding his snowmachine, was thrown from the machine and then run over by it. Alcohol was not involved, troopers said.
The North Slope Borough Search and Rescue squad launched the search late Saturday after being informed that Kagak had left Wainwright that afternoon but failed to arrive at his home.
Kagak was dressed in warm clothes and was pulling a sled with extra gas and food. The wind chill was 95 degrees below zero, troopers said.
Kagak's death was the 22nd snowmachine death in Alaska so far this winter.
