Bill introduced to name Fairbanks airport after Wood

JUNEAU (AP) -- Fairbanks legislators have introduced a measure that would rename Fairbanks International Airport in honor of the late William R. Wood.

Sen. Gary Wilken and Rep. Jim Whitaker filed bills in their respective chambers Monday, seeking to change the name of the state-owned and operated airport to the ''Bill Wood Fairbanks International Airport.''

The 94-year-old Wood died Sunday at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

''If all of us -- in the seats we have the privilege to sit in while we are here -- do a fraction of the good that Bill Wood did, then surely we will have succeeded,'' Wilken, R-Fairbanks, told his fellow senators.

Wood arrived in Fairbanks in 1960 to serve as president of the University of Alaska. He spent 13 years leading the statewide university system through a major expansion.

Wood later served as Fairbanks mayor and remained a community activist until his final days.
