GENEVA (AP) The world total of Lutherans reached just under 66 million at the end of 2003, a net increase of 570,000 since 2001, the Lutheran World Federation reported.
Lutheranism in Africa grew 9.3 percent in the two years for a new total of 13 million. The largest African Lutheran body, Ethiopia's Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, gained 673,730 members and now counts 4,033,413.
Churches in Europe have decreased by 640,467 members since 2001 and those in North America by 84,179 members.
