Peninsula puts three girls in top 10

Skyview's Habermann leads the charge by finishing second at state ski meet

Posted: Friday, February 27, 2004

Skyview's Elisabeth Habermann led three peninsula skiers in the top 10 with a second-place finish Thursday in the first day of the state cross-country skiing championships at Birch Hill Recreation Area in Fairbanks.

Last year, Habermann finished fourth in the freestyle portion of the state meet. Thursday, she blazed over the 7.5-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 34 seconds. That was almost a full minute behind winner Katie Ronsse of Service.

Homer's Aleta Phelps joined Habermann in the top 10, finishing fourth in 25:53. Soldotna's Katie Franzmann also cracked the top 10, finishing seventh in 26:34.

Ronsse's performance helped Service, which has won the last six girls titles and also has claimed skimeister honors the past six years, take control in the girls team standings. The Cougars placed three in the top 10 and are almost four minutes ahead of runner-up West Valley.

Soldotna leads all peninsula schools, sitting in fourth. Skyview is in sixth, Homer is in 11th, Seward is in 13th and Kenai is in 15th.

On the boys side, Chugiak senior Justin Singleton moved into position to join 2000 Colony graduate Eric Strabel as the only boy to win three skimeister crowns. Singleton finished the 10-kilometer course in 28:02 and has an 11-second lead over Mike Hinckley of Service.

The Cougars, who won state titles in 2000 and 2001, moved into position to take back the boys team title. Service leads runner-up Chugiak by over 2 1/2 minutes in the team standings.

Soldotna is in ninth and leads all peninsula teams. Also from the peninsula, Kenai is in 10th, Skyview is in 11th, Seward is in 13th and Homer is in 14th.

Morgan Jones, the winner of this year's Kenai Peninsula Borough meet, had the top boys finish from the peninsula. Jones finished 18th in 30 minutes, 39 seconds.
