Levi Andrew Smith

Smiths welcome son

Allison and Philip Smith, of Soldotna, announce the birth of their son, Levi Andrew Smith, on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at 4:24 a.m., at Central Peninsula Hospital, in Soldotna. Levi weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce, and measured 20.5 inches.

His grandparents are Bob and Joni Harbert, of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; and Lloyd and Kathy Smith, of Knoxville, Tenn.

Van Vleet family grows

Samantha and Daniel Van Vleet, of Soldotna, announce the birth of their daughter, Averly JoAnne Van Vleet, on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at 3:56 p.m., at the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. She weighed 6 pounds, 14.5 ounces and measured 20 inches. Averly joins siblings Madison and Daniel. Her grandparents are Skyla and Telford Weister, of Anchorage; Tom Van Vleet, of Soldotna; Amanda Stigall, of Kenai; and Curtis Stigall, of Sterling. Great-grandparents are Judy and Jerry Farrington, of Soldotna; Marilyn and Lyle Van Vleet, of Soldotna; Margaret Sanders, of Texas; and Michael and Penny Prewitt, of Zion, Ill.

Community Heart Health Program for women offered

An Informational Meeting will be held Monday, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center to share information about the upcoming Strong Women-Healthy Hearts Program. This 12-week nutrition and exercise program for women age 40 and over is being offered by the Cooperative Extension Service. The classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center March 7 through May 25. Attend this meeting to decide if this program is right for you. Week-long aviation camp in March

The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska is hosting a spring-break aviation camp, Challengers ACE Academy, for students in grades 8-11. The camp will have an orientation flight for all attendees, and include hands-on experience with Medallion flight simulator, wing design, forces of flight, weather and other aviation topics. CLCA is an approved vendor for Connections and IDEA. This camp will also satisfy many of the requirements for aviation related badges for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. ACE runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and costs $275. Participants should bring their own lunch each day. The Challenger center is located at 9711 Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai.
