Wasilla cagers blow past Homer, Skyview

Posted: Sunday, February 27, 2011

WASILLA -- In recent seasons, Homer and Skyview -- Wasilla's opponents during the final two days of the regular season -- have typically owned the bottom two spots in the Northern Lights Conference Southern Division.

Even though the Mariners and Panthers have struggled, Wasilla coach Ryan Engebretsen knows the two-time defending Northern Lights Conference champion Warriors have to be prepared regardless of the opponent.

"Do what we need to do, and we'll take care of business," Engebretsen said after Wasilla's 72-33 win over Skyview on Saturday at Wasilla High School. "Play the game we're capable of playing. We have to play Wasilla basketball against whoever you're playing."

Wasilla used Connor Devine's 27-point effort to score the lopsided win over the Panthers and clinch the top seed from the NLC North with its 9-1 mark.

Junior Braydon Kuiper scored 14 points in the win, and Wade Stahle added 13. Eight different Warriors scored for Wasilla, but the bulk of the damage came courtesy of Devine.

Devine hit nine shots from the floor and was also a perfect 9 for 9 from the free-throw line. Thirteen of his game-high total came during Wasilla's 15-point second quarter.

Homer, fresh off a win over Soldotna, played Wasilla tough early. Wasilla bounced back from an early 13-12 first-quarter deficit and scored the 65-34 win.

"They came ready to play," Engebretsen said of the Mariners.

Stahle scored a game-high 15 points, and Devine and Cole Schierman each added 12.

Homer took a 13-12 lead into the second quarter.

"They had some wide-open looks," Engebretsen said. "Defensively, we just weren't getting after it."

Schierman scored of his points during Wasilla's 21-point second.
