The 2000 Upper Cook Inlet commercial herring gillnet fishery will open April 20 and close May 20 only in the Upper Subdistrict (the Kenai Peninsula shoreline from Ninilchik to Boulder Point) and gear must be set at least 600 feet offshore of the mean high tide mark. Only gillnets are permitted.
Two weekly fishing periods will be allowed during the course of the fishery.
Fishing will be open each week from 6 a.m. Monday to Tuesday at noon and from 6 a.m. Thursday to Friday at noon. Harvests will be monitored closely and total catch will not be allowed to exceed 40 tons.
All participants in this fishery are required to register with the department's Soldotna office, no later than March 15. Fishers also are required to report fishing time and the amount of herring harvested to the Soldotna office within 12 hours of closure of the fishing period.
