School budget meeting planned

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly and the school board will meet Tuesday for a joint work session about the budget for the 2000-01 school year. The school district is planning to lay off teachers and reduce programs to deal with a projected $3 million shortfall.

The meeting begins at 10 a.m. in the borough assembly chambers and is open to the public.

Little cheerleader clinic scheduled

A Kenai Central High School little cheerleader day clinic will be held Saturday with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. Girls in grades kindergarten through fifth are invited to a day of learning and fun. The cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt, cheer brochure, rooter pompom, lunch and a certificate of participation.

Stop smoking classes offered

Classes for a five-day stop smoking plan will begin Sunday and run through March 9. Classes will be held downstairs in the Seventh Day Adventist Church at 7 p.m. each day. The classes are free. For more information, call 283-2765.

Ski races planned March 11

Tsalteshi Trails Association and Central Peninsula Habitat for Humanity are hosting the annual Ski for Habitat and Tsalteshi Trails Association cross-country ski races March 11 at the Skyview High School ski trails.

Pledge sheets are available at Kaladi Brothers, Wilderness Way, Kenai and Soldotna libraries and from area ski coaches. The event includes food and dog sled rides for the kids. For more information, call the habitat office at 283-7797.

Habitat for Humanity applications sought

Central Peninsula Habitat for Humanity is seeking applications for home ownership of the affiliate's ninth home. Construction on the home will begin this year. Applicants must be willing to partner with the affiliate, able to pay the no-interest monthly mortgage payments and currently be living in substandard housing.
