Posted: Wednesday, February 28, 2001

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A Kivalina man was found dead early Tuesday morning of injuries he suffered in a snowmachine accident.

Villagers found Robert Hawley Jr., 44, near his snowmachine in the Kivalina lagoon. They notified Alaska State Troopers at 3 a.m.

Troopers said Hawley was apparently traveling fast, without a helmet, and that he apparently had been drinking alcohol.

Hawley's body was sent to Anchorage for an autopsy.

Troopers said Hawley is the 23rd snowmachine-related fatality of the winter.

Kivalina is on the west coast of Alaska 80 miles northwest of Kotzebue.
