ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A 35-year-old man from a southwest Alaska village has been sentenced to 129 years in prison for the 1998 rape and murder of a woman at a downtown Anchorage motel.

Joe Mark of Goodnews Bay was convicted in September for the murder of Pamela Ann Jiminez. He was sentenced Monday.

Prosecutors said Mark raped the woman, nearly strangled her and then dropped her headfirst from the window of his third-floor motel room.

Superior Court Judge Milton Souter said he was sentencing Mark to a term so long that he would be in his late 70s before becoming eligible for parole.

Mark had prior convictions for assault and sexual assault. He was previously convicted of repeatedly having sex with an 11-year-old girl while he was a Goodnews Bay police officer.

Goodnews Bay is on Kuskokwim Bay, about 100 miles south of Bethel.
