Schools, government are top employers

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District remains the borough's top employer, followed by state, federal and borough government.

The biggest private employers were Peak Oilfield Services, Safeway, Fred Meyer and Agrium Inc.

According to the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the borough's top 10 wage-and-salary employers and the numbers of jobs they provided from the fourth quarter of 1999 to the third quarter of 2000 were:

State of Alaska, 1,024

U.S. Government, 436

Kenai Peninsula Borough, 345

Peak Oilfield Services, 339

Safeway, 337

Central Peninsula General Hospital, 305

Fred Meyer, 244

South Peninsula Hospital, 238

Agrium Inc., 230

Wage-and-salary job tallies do not include self-employed workers such as commercial fishers or bed-and-breakfast operators.
