Brown Bears drop 2 on road

The Brown Bears continued to struggle on their current nine-game road trip, losing Friday and Saturday to the Topeka RoadRunners.

Kenai River has now lost seven games in a row and remains in last place in the North American Hockey League West Division. Kenai River is 14-30-7, while Topeka is now 38-7-4 and tied for the top record in the league.

On Saturday, the Brown Bears lost 3-0 in front of 1,956 fans. Lyle Rocker had 23 saves to record the shutout for the RoadRunners, while Jimmy Hamby had 37 saves in the losing effort for the Brown Bears.

Topeka scored one goal in each period.

In Friday's game, the Brown Bears took a 2-0 lead into the third period, but the RoadRunners came back for a 5-3 victory in front of 1,925 fans.

Ryan Goodmanson, on assists from Kyle Clay and Jake Musselman, and Joe Spencer, on assists from Nick Simson and Andrej Sustr, gave the Brown Bears a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Neither team scored in the second period, but the RoadRunners came out firing in the third. Bob Marx, Bryon Paulazzo, Jeff Burke and Matt Hartmann ticked off goals as Topeka had a 4-2 lead with 7:58 to play.

Goodmanson, on assists from Clay and Chris Annunziato, cut into the lead with a power-play goal, but Steve Shafer salted away the victory for the RoadRunners with 0:53 to play when he scored.

Jimmy Hamby had 25 saves for the Brown Bears, while Bryce Merriam had 20 saves for the RoadRunners.
