OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Lutherans in the East Bay have openly defied their parent church by ordaining a gay priest who lives with another man.
Craig Minich has been named director of youth ministries for both Saint Paul and United Lutheran churches in Oakland and University Lutheran Chapel of Berkeley.
The three parishes are affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. That group had denied Minich the priesthood because of his lifestyle.
The national Lutheran Church says that openly gay candidates for the priesthood must take a vow of celibacy because of its belief that sex should only take place in the framework of a traditional marriage.
