Whitney Leman, daughter of Dan and Jamie Leman is in her senior year at Eastern Oregon University. She is a media arts major and a member of the Lady Mountaineers basketball team. In 2007 she was named the Outstanding Player of the Year and won the school's Lund Champions of Character Scholarship Award. Whitney has the single game assist record holder and broke the record last year with 14 assists. Jamie told me that because of an injury she received during a practice at the beginning of the season, Whitney travels with the team as an injured player.

Amanda Matson, daughter of Larry and Cheryl Matson, also is a senior at EOU and a member of the basketball team. She is a business administration major and won Scholar/Athlete of the Year in 2007.

The team is ranked 23rd in the nation for National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II and is in first place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. They have gone to nationals for the past two years and have a good chance at returning this year. Information about the team is available on the a Web site that Whitney created: http://whitneyleman.tripod.com//index.html.

Whitney and Amanda are graduates of Ninilchik School and were members of the Lady Wolverines' basketball team. On Feb. 23, both sets of parents attended a celebration at EOU where they accompanied their daughters onto the floor when the girls were recognized for their achievements.

Congratulations to Sarah Cobb for winning third place and a $1,000 U.S. savings bond in the American Legion Oratorical contest at the state level competition held in Anchorage last weekend. Sarah is in 10th grade and is home-schooled with the IDEA program. She is the daughter of Larry and Suzan Cobb.

A workday for assembling baskets is scheduled at 10 a.m. for March 20 at Cindy Crabb's home.
