The afternoon after an explosion at the Alaska Nitrogen Products plant, the Community Alert Network was used to update nearby residents on the incident, which occurred at 1:31 a.m. Aug. 20, 1999:

"The following message is a follow-up to the explosion which occurred this morning at the Alaska Nitrogen Products plant.

"Plant condition -- all the plants have been shut down. Utility plant is in operation to maintain electrical power and steam for the process plants.

"Current actions -- a damage assessment has been done. Clean-up operations have begun. As a result of the explosion, there were no airborne contaminants emitted to the community.

"Updates will be given on KSRM 920 AM."
