Kards trump Knights

The Kenai Kardinals boys basketball team showed that good things can happen when four players score in double figures Saturday, downing Region III/4A rival Colony 71-68.

The Kards followed the hot hand of Marcus Webster, who poured in 24 points to lead Kenai, while Jason Magsayo scored 14, Joel Dunn added 12 and Caleb Schooley trickled in 10. Three other Kenai players put points on the board. J. D. Pault scored five while teammate Ian Foley added four and Brad Burck chipped in two.

The Kardinals took a 35-28 first-half lead over the Knights, holding on to the lead to preserve the 3-point victory.

Colony girls 46, Kenai 41

The Kenai Kardinals girls basketball team felt the sting of a loss for only the third time this season as they fell to Region III/4A rival Colony in a defensive game that found only three total players scoring in double digits.

The Kards and the Knights headed into second-half action with an 18-18 tie but the Knights proved too much for the Kardinals, outscoring them 28-23 to take home the victory.

Colony followed the hot hands of Kristine Klapprich and Kelly Quinn, who had 13 points apiece.

The Kardinals used the scoring ability of Karli Knudsen, who had 10 points, to keep the contest close but could not find enough scoring opportunities to pull out the victory. Jamie Montgomery added nine points for the Kards while Jessi Reilly, Michelle Edwards and Erica Shinn chipped in six apiece and Erin Smith and Anna Hall tallied two points each in the losing effort.

Palmer girls 52, Soldotna 39

The Soldotna Stars girls basketball team could not withstand the scoring power of the Palmer Moose Saturday as they fell in the Region III/4A contest.

The Moose, led by Sara Bergeron with 14 points, took a slight 25-24 first-half lead before dominating the Stars in the second half. Tami Callison and Emily Balling added 10 points each for Palmer.

Soldotna followed the lead of Rachel Besse, who poured in 14 points, in a rare night that did not find anyone else scoring into double digits for the Stars.

The Stars hit only 12-of-21 free throws while sending the Moose to the line for 7-of-9.

Palmer Boys 71, Soldotna 57

The Soldotna boys went from a trailing Palmer by a point, 22-21, at the half to a 14-point loss in a matter of 16 playable minutes Saturday in a Region III/4A game.

The Moose hit 25 shots from the floor and two 3-point goals to slam Soldotna with the loss. Palmer followed the hot hand of C.J. Hooker, who had 24 points, while Zac Forsyth added 16 points, Zach Pettit tallied 12 and Adam Nielsen chipped in 11.

Aaron Hughes poured in 20 points for the Stars while teammate Adam Kiffmeyer added 12 in the losing effort. The Stars hit six 3-pointers but could not come back for the win against the overwhelming Moose squad.

Kodiak boys 67, Homer 60

The might of the No. 1 ranked Kodiak Bears proved too much for the Homer Mariners Saturday as they fell in a Region III/4A matchup.

The Bears took to a 34-19 first-half lead but had to fend off a resurging Mariners squad that outscored them 41-33 in the second half.

Kodiak followed the scoring of 6-foot-11 Nick Billings, who poured in 23 points, while teammate Geoff Agmata added 13 and Tim LeDoux pitched in 10.

The Mariners, who had all but three players score, were led by Skylar Burns with 14 points while Corey Boone added 11 and Royce Holm notched 10 in the losing effort.
