Former Alaska resident Richard W. Smith died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Sheridan Manor in Sheridan, Wyo. He was 87.
A cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Anchorage at a later date.
Mr. Smith was born Sept. 20, 1917, in Powers, Ore., to Billy Head and Cora (Chapman) Smith. He grew up and attended schools in Oregon. He graduated from Willamette University in 1940. He married Glenna Della Lewis on Dec. 20, 1940.
He was an Alaska resident for more than 50 years and an accountant in Anchorage for Alaska Sales and Service and Anchorage Refuse. While retired, he worked as an attendant to children on school buses in Anchorage, Loveland, Colo., and Big Horn, Wyo. He was better known as Grandpa Smith.
He was the past exalted ruler of the Elks's Club in Anchorage and member of the Pioneers of Alaska.
Mr. Smith was proceeded in death by his wife, parents, two sisters and one son.
He is survived by his sons, Ronald E. Smith of Loveland, Michael L. Smith of Anchorage, Harry D. "Beany" Smith of Anchorage and Billy C. Smith of Kenai; daughter, Patricia L. Fisher of Big Horn; brother, Eugene C. Smith of Anchorage; and 14 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were made by Champion Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan.
