North sweeps South in NLC tourney

The Northern Division swept the Southern Division at the first day of play at the Northern Lights Conference tournament in Homer on Thursday.

The Kenai Central girls and boys both had top seeds out of the Southern Division, but both fell to Kodiak, which was the No. 4 seed out of the Southern Division.

The Kenai boys fell behind Kodiak 22-5 after the first quarter. The Kardinals quickly closed the gap in the second quarter, scoring 15 straight points to cut the gap to 22-20. Kodiak, though, pushed the lead to 31-20 at halftime. The Bears were able to hold that lead through the second half for the victory.

Ralphy Matautia had 18 points to lead Kodiak. Matautia was instrumental in the quick start, scoring 10 points in the first quarter. Austin Cowley had 14 points for the Bears.

For Kenai, AJ Hull had 18 points.

Kodiak girls 30, Kenai Central 28

The Bears, the No. 4 seed out of the Northern Division, used suffocating defense in the final three quarters to knock off the Kardinals, the No. 1 seed from the Southern Division.

Kodiak advances to a semifinal matchup with Colony today at 3 p.m., while Kenai falls into the third-place bracket and faces Skyview at 8 a.m. today.

The Kardinals took a 14-4 lead against the Bears after the first quarter. After that, though, Kodiak would come back by holding Kenai to just 14 points in the last three quarters. The biggest turnaround came in the third quarter, when Kodiak outscored Kenai 13-0 to take a 28-23 lead. Kenai held Kodiak to just two points in the final quarter, but could not score enough to complete the comeback.

Kenai's Raquel Young led all scorers with 11 points, while Joanna Garcia had 10 points for the Bears.

Colony girls 59, Skyview 23

The Knights, the No. 2 seed from the Northern Division, ran away from the Panthers, the No. 3 seed from the Southern Division.

Colony led 16-6 after the first quarter and 32-8 at halftime. The Knights will play Kodiak in the semifinals at 3 p.m. today, while Kenai will play Skyview at 8 a.m. in the third-place bracket.

Mary Klapperich had 13 points for Colony, while Pherrari Brumbaugh had 12 points and Kaitlyn Klapperich had 11 points. For Skyview, Mary Hauptman had 11 points.

Colony boys 54, Soldotna 40

One bad quarter did in the Stars, the No. 2 seed from the Southern Division, in a matchup with the Knights, the No. 3 seed from the Northern Division.

Soldotna had a 15-13 lead after the first quarter, but was outscored 18-5 in the second quarter. Soldotna was then outscored 21-20 in the second half.

Payton McCann had 13 points for the Knights, while Jared Turner and Hunter Eisenhower each added 12 points. For Soldotna, Evan Withrow had 10 points before fouling out.

Colony moves to a semifinal matchup against Wasilla at 4:45 p.m. today, while Soldotna plays a third-place bracket game against Skyview at 9:45 a.m. today.

Palmer girls 33, Soldotna 24

The Stars, the No. 2 seed from the Southern Division, could not overcome a slow start against the Moose, the No. 3 seed from the Northern Division.

Palmer grabbed a 12-1 lead after the first quarter and still led 17-9 at the half. SoHi cut the lead to 23-18 after three quarters, then scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to pull within 23-22. That was as close as SoHi would get. A layup by Kelci Benson cut the lead to 27-24 with 2:30 left, but SoHi would not score the rest of the game.

Free throws were crucial in the game. Soldotna went 8-of-23 from the line, while Palmer went 7-of-20 from the line. Kendal Venzke had 11 points for Palmer, while Julie Litchfield pumped in 11 points for the Stars.

Wasilla girls 64, Homer 14

The Warriors, the No. 1 seed from the Northern Division, blew past the Mariners, the No. 4 seed from the Southern Division.

Wasilla will play Palmer in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. today. Homer will play SoHi in the third-place bracket at 11:30 a.m.

The Warriors used a balanced attack, with 11 players scoring. Hilary Apangolook and Kelsey Cottle each had nine. For Homer, Elissa Tutt had five.

Wasilla boys 56, Skyview 31

The Warriors, the top seed from the Northern Division, streaked past the Panthers, the No. 4 seed from the Southern Division.

Wasilla takes on Colony in the semifinals today at 4:45 p.m., while Skyview faces Soldotna in the third-place bracket at 9:45 a.m.

Palmer 66, Homer 38

Sean Niekamp scored 16 points, leading a balanced scoring attack as the Palmer boys cruised past Homer 66-38.

The Moose, seeded No. 2 from the Northern Division, advance to face No. 4 Kodiak at 8:15 p.m. today. The Mariners, the Southern No. 3 squad, face Kenai Central in a loser-out game at 1:15 p.m. today.

Robin Glosser scored eight points for the Mariners on Thursday.
