Nikiski girls edge Seward

The Nikiski High School girls basketball team edged the Seward Seahawks 41-35 Saturday in a District 3/3A game in Seward.

The victory gave the Bulldogs a sweep in the regular-season series with their Class 3A peninsula rival.

Heading into the game, Nikiski was in first place in the district, while Seward was in second. The Bulldogs improved to 11-1 in the district and 17-4 overall, while Seward dropped to 7-4 in the district and 11-7 overall.

The Bulldogs led by two points with under a minute to play, but Nikiski hit some free throws when Seward was forced to foul to stop the clock.

April Lofstedt, Sally Glaze, Dayna Pritchard and Laura Berdahl each hit a shot from the charity stripe to cushion the Bulldogs lead.

The Bulldogs led by a point, 18-17, at the half, and both teams matched shots the rest of the way.

Seward's Erin Carr led all scorers with 18 points, while Berdahl had 17 for the Bulldogs and Glaze chipped in with 16. Glaze hit three shots from behind the 3-point arc for Nikiski.

Seward jumped out to a 19-11 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, taking a District 3/3A win at home over the Bulldogs.

Clint Draper led the Seward attack with 31 points, including seven treys, tying a Seahawks record.

Scott Bartlett netted 13 and Ryan Lewis chipped in woth 12 for Seward.

Scott Carlson was the top Nikiski scorer, netting 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Cory Hershberger and Erica Shinn each netted 10 points in the Kardinals' Region III/4A win over the Bears.

Kenai trailed by four points, 29-25, entering the third quarter, but Hershberger and Shinn each scored eight points in the period as the Kardinals put together a 21-7 run to close the game.

Big man Nick Billings dropped 14 points on the visiting Kardinals Friday night in the Region III/4A contest.

Kodiak improved to 7-3 in the region and 14-5 overall, while Kenai dropped to 1-8 in league play and 4-14 overall.

Kyle Oldring paced Kenai with 14 points, while Marcus Webster added 12. Tim LeDoux chipped in 10 points for the Bears.

The visiting Kardinals survived a scare in a Region III/4A victory.

The Bears pushed Kenai to overtime, but Kenai allowed just two points in the extra frame and Kardinals senior Cory Hershberger scored all of her team's seven points to secure the tough road win.

Hershberger chalked up 20 points to lead all scorers, while backcourt partner Jessi Reilly added 10. For Kodiak, Monica Scarr-Pryor cashed in 13 points.

The Kardinals improved to 7-2 in the region and 16-3 overall, while Kodiak dropped to 2-8 and 6-16.

Chugiak boys 61, Skyview 32

The Mustangs, ranked seventh in the latest prep poll, overwhelmed the host Panthers in the nonconference contest.

Skyview, which did not attempt a free throw, was able to muster just 32 points, including 10 in the second half. Meanwhile, Chugiak put up 32 points in the first half alone.

Chugiak captain Jason Erickson threw 16 points on the scoreboard to pace all scorers, while Troy Gray chipped in 11 points for the Mustangs.

Dan Davis dumped in 14 points to pace the Panthers, who are now 5-12 overall.

The host Seahawks were down 23-22 at halftime, but outscored the Stars 23-6 in the third quarter to come away with the nonconference triumph.

Erin Carr, who would lead all scorers with 15 points, had 11 in the decisive third quarter. Ruth Banse and Carrie Fisher chipped in 10 points apiece for the Seahawks, who are now 11-6 overall.

Rachel Besse bottomed out 12 points for the Stars, who fell to 6-12.
