UA president honored by National Association of Scholars

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- University of Alaska president Mark Hamilton will be honored by the National Association of Scholars next weekend.

On Sunday, Hamilton will receive an Academic Freedom Award from the association. The award is given to academic leaders who make significant contributions to the cause of academic freedom and integrity.

Hamilton is the first recipient of the award, accordign to UA officials.

Hamilton's support for the right of free speech was noted last year in the Wall Street Journal and the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The National Association of Scholars is a higher education reform group based in Princeton, New Jersey.
