Parents, coaches, volunteers must set example

Posted: Friday, March 05, 2010

As a first year hockey family with a young player, we have been so appreciative of the incredible amount of volunteer effort it takes to make KPHA the success it is. Being both parents and volunteers in our community we knew to jump in and help where we could, but the outpouring of energy from the many tireless hockey volunteers and organizers is impressive.

When coaching other sports we have encountered a variety of attitudes. Unfortunately, not all of them have been positive. Today, after our young children's hockey game we all witnessed a shocking display of rudeness in the locker room by a parent. It is up to us as parents to teach our children cooperation, conflict resolution, and good sportsmanship. That is done best by role modeling it.

Without adults volunteering their time and energy youth sports would not exist. Here we are ending one sports season and about to begin another. This is a good chance to remember the positive impact we can all have on sports in our community whether we coach the team or cheer from the sidelines.

So, coaches and volunteers, please remember that there are many parents who deeply appreciate the work you do with our kids. Thanks for teaching them the value of volunteering. It won't be long before it will be their turn to do the same.
