Bulldogs drop 2: Nikiski girls, boys, Seward boys all miss out on state berths

The Grace Christian girls basketball team defeated Nikiski 39-34 on Thursday in the opening round of the Southcentral Conference tournament at Seward High School. The loss ended the season for the Bulldogs.

The Grizzlies, who had split with Nikiski during the regular season, grabbed an 11-0 lead after one quarter. Nikiski cut the lead to 16-6 at halftime, and to 24-20 entering the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, the Grizzlies hit 8-of-12 free throws to hold off the Bulldogs.

Marjorie Dupea had 12 points to lead the Grizzlies, while Mackenzie Fredrickson chipped in 10 points for the winning side. For Nikiski, Makenzie Moore had 12 points.

Grace boys 53, Nikiski 37

The Bulldogs were eliminated from state-berth contention on Thursday with an opening round loss.

Nikiski will now play in a consolation game at 9 a.m. on Saturday against Seward, while the Grizzlies move on to the semifinals.

Grace grabbed a 15-9 lead after one quarter and a 26-15 lead at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, the lead was 39-24.

Ron Francher and Caleb Davis paced Grace with 13 points apiece, while Grant Mathews had 12 points. For Nikiski, Brando Wik had 10 points.

ACS boys 46, Seward 43

The Seahawks will not return to state after losing to the Lions on Thursday.

ACS got the upper hand early, taking a 26-16 lead at halftime. Seward cut the lead to 34-27 in the third period, but could never catch the Lions.

Gus Simmers and Aaron Richwine had 11 points apiece to lead ACS. Andrew Buchanan had 15 points to pace the Seahawks, while Michael Thorn pitched in 11.
