CIA girls win conference

Posted: Sunday, March 06, 2011

The Cook Inlet Academy girls basketball team rolled to a 52-22 win over Seldovia, earning the Peninsula Conference championship at Bristol Bay School on Friday.

The Eagles, who finished the season undefeated in conference play, earn a No. 1 seed to the Class 2A state tournament at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage with their second straight conference title. State begins March 14.

In boys action, Lumen Christi defeated Cook Inlet 62-46 in Friday's title contest. The Eagles then lost to Bristol Bay, 67-32, in the game for second place on Saturday. The loss ended the Eagles' season. In Saturday's second-place girls game, Seldovia topped Ninilchik 28-13, stopping the Wolverines' string of state appearances at 19.

Phone calls to coaches and athletic directors Thursday through Saturday were not returned, and updates were not provided by tournament organizers online or via fax. Area coaches were not getting cell phone reception in Bristol Bay. The Clarion will print results when they are available.
