Fairbanks man gets nine years for molesting girls

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A 32-year-old Fairbanks man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for molesting two of his live-in girlfriend's daughters.

Ernest Figgeroa III, who was sentenced Tuesday, was indicted in June on three counts of first-degree and one count of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor. He later pleaded no contest to one count each of first- and second-degree sexual abuse of a minor.

The charges stemmed from incidents that took place between September 1998 and December 2000. Fairbanks District Attorney Teresa Foster said the girls were 10 and 14 years old at the time of the incidents.

At Figgeroa's sentencing, Foster argued for a 9 1/2-year sentence, noting that the crimes had destroyed the family and that two of the three girls in the household were now in other homes.
