Homer resident Eleanor F. Parsons died Monday, March 4, 2002, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer. She was 96.
A celebration of her life will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Homer Senior Center.
Mrs. Parsons was born Feb. 12, 1906, in Jersey City, N.J. She learned about life from the ages of 1 to 9 on a farm in the Aland Islands in the middle of the Baltic Sea.
In Mountain Lakes, N.J., she was a member of the Community Church and St. Clare's Hospital Auxiliaries. She also volunteered at the Riverside Hospital.
Mrs. Parsons moved to Homer in 1998 at the age of 92.
She was a fine bridge and pinochle player and loved to fish and be out on the water. Her needlework will be enjoyed by many for years to come. She was also an avid reader of three to five books per week and a crossword fan.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her family said.
"Eleanor enjoyed life embracing family and friends of all ages with humor and generosity. After spending most of her life on the East Coast, at 92, she left New Jersey to live with her daughter Gale in Homer. Making new friends was easier than expected because of the kindness and warmth of the Homer seniors at the center and friends of Gale and Mike. After a year in Homer, she said, 'It feels like home.' Eleanor loved a party and was the last to leave the dance floor at her 95th birthday celebration," her family said.
Mrs. Parsons was preceded in death by her husband H.W. "Pete" Parsons.
She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Peter H. and Nancy Parsons of Boonton, N.J.; daughter and son-in-law Gale E. Parsons and Michael Swan of Homer; grandsons, Jeffrey Parsons and his wife Susan and Steven Parsons; great-grandchildren, Alicia and Brian Parsons of New Jersey.
Arrangements were by Homer Funeral Home.
