2001 SoHi graduate Liebner finishes fifth in Older Junior race

Kikkan Randall and Mark Iverson paced the Alaska contingent with victories in the classical races at the 2002 Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships Wednesday in McCall, Idaho.

Randall, a 2001 graduate of East High and a 2002 Olympian, won the girls 10-kilometer classical race in 36 minutes, 21.3 seconds. Alaska's Christina May was second at 36:42.1. Randall also had won the freestyle sprint race Monday.

In the men's Older Junior 15-kilometer classical race, Iverson won in 48:24.1. Runner-up Zach Violett of Far West finished at 48:34.7.

The top performance by a skier from the Kenai Peninsula was turned in by 2001 Soldotna High School graduate Andy Liebner, who now competes for the Great Lakes region. Liebner finished fifth in the Older Junior race with a time of 50:09.0.

Liebner's former teammate, SoHi senior Brent Knight, also had a solid race Wednesday. Knight finished 11th in the Junior 1 15-kilometer classical race. His time was 52:56.6 and he was the top finisher from Alaska in the race. In that same Junior 1 race, Soldotna junior Daniel Harro was 25th at 55:07.7 and Nikiski senior Zack Hall was 27th at 55:14.9.

Kenai Central senior Mary Krusen and Soldotna junior Mary Krusen also competed in the Junior 1 girls 10-kilometer classical race Wednesday. Krusen finished 37th with a time of 43:14.3, while Goldstein was 40th with a time of 43:34.2.

Ida Martin, a 2001 graduate of Homer High School who now competes for the Rocky Mountain region, finished 20th in the Older Junior 10-kilometer classical race. Martin had a time of 42:00.3.

The Junior Olympics continue with freestyle races Friday and relay races Saturday.
