MINNEAPOLIS (AP) When a train derailed in northwestern Minnesota, the Canadian Pacific Railway called a rabbi for help.
A tank car in the Feb. 8 accident in Karlstad contained 185,000 pounds of kosher canola oil, and a rabbi was needed to help workers recover the load without violating Jewish dietary laws.
The rabbi was asked to certify as kosher a food-grade pump and hoses before a crew used them to transfer the oil into another kosher tank car.
The oil, which had been bound for a distributor on the West Coast, was then reprocessed.
