Diane Benson will be the first indigenous women elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She will get an exceptional voter turnout this November from indigenous communities all across Alaska because of the things she is thinking and doing now.
First of all, Diane is respecting Alaska's indigenous people by calling us people, or First People. She feels we should be called people all the time. Diane believes there is hope for our distance communities if we can see achievement in those communities in terms of total community wellness and economic prosperity.
This is a situation where new village civic economies are built on local ownership, entrepreneurship and sovereign access to the many natural resources that surround our communities.
Diane understands that ANCSA has done little for village residents for an improved quality of life. Diane believes the achievement in our indigenous communities will call for our Native corporation system to re-assess who they serve: the First People of Alaska of the government entwined corporate system whose goal is huge profit.
