SoHi, Kenai boys fall in semifinals

Posted: Sunday, March 07, 2010

Free throws were the difference as Colony defeated Soldotna 59-54 in overtime in Friday's Northern Lights Conference semifinals at Skyview High School.

The Knights made 12-of-14 free throws in the extra period. Colony senior John Palmer went 6-of-6 from the line and Scott Herman was 6-of-8 during overtime. Palmer paced the Knights with 21 points. Herman followed with 18.

The Stars shot just 3-of-12 from the field in OT.

"They hit a couple of free throws down the stretch," said Stars assistant coach Bill Withrow.

After trailing by as many as 13 in the second quarter, SoHi went on a 16-5 run in the third. They took a one-point lead after Blaine Carver drained a 3-pointer. Carver, who led SoHi with 22 points, and Boomer Blossom each had seven points during the run. Blossom scored 18 total points.

"We played with a lot of heart and a lot of pride," Withrow said of the second half.

The Knights took an eight-point lead early in the fourth, courtesy of a Palmer 3-pointer. A Tyler Hahn bucket and Robbie Smithwick 3-pointer brought the Stars within two. With under a minute to play, Blossom stole Colony's inbounds pass. He missed a shot but DJ Stilchen got the board and the put-back to knot the game at 45.

Palmer then stepped out of bounds, giving SoHi possession with just under 15 seconds to play. The Stars couldn't get a shot to fall and time expired, forcing overtime.

Though SoHi came out flat, they came out hard in the second half, Withrow said.

"We gave ourselves a chance to win it," he said. "This team doesn't quit. They play hard. It's been our trademark all year."

"It's a giant relief," Colony head coach Jeff Bowker said of the win, which clinched a state berth for the Knights. "Your seniors are moving on."

Having seen SoHi twice this season -- winning both times -- Bowker was prepared for the close contest.

"These are two very evenly matched, very similar teams," he said.

When the crowd increasing in volume as the Stars made their run, Palmer handled the situation well, Bowker said.

"John did a good job controlling the game," he said. "He showed terrific leadership."

Wasilla boys 52, Kenai 31

Cody Pfeifer and Connor Devine combined for 39 points to lead the Warriors over Kenai on Friday. Pfeifer led Wasilla with 23 points. Devine scored 16.

Wasilla held a 23-19 lead at the half. The Warriors went on a 12-3 run to start the third quarter. They held an 11-point advantage at the end of the period.

Wasilla prevented any hopes of a Kenai comeback, holding the Kards to just five fourth-quarter points.

The Warriors shot 81 percent from the line, going 13-of-16. Kenai made seven of its 13 free-throw attempts.

In the first half, Kenai and Wasilla traded strings of points.

The Kardinals went on a 5-0 run to start the game. Wasilla answered with a 12-0 run to end the first quarter. Kenai came right back in the second with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 12-all.
