Colony pulls away late to move to finals: Knights run away from Kards late in game after Klapperich's three-point play

Posted: Sunday, March 07, 2010

Mary Klapperich's three-point play was the beginning of the end for Kenai Central's girls in Friday's Northern Lights Conference semifinal against Colony at Skyview High School.

Klapperich broke a 26-all tie, giving the Knights a three-point lead with under three minutes left in the game. The Kardinals wouldn't score for the rest of the contest.

Colony held Kenai to just two fourth-quater points en route to a 35-26 win.

"That three-point play was the turning point," Kards head coach Stacia Rustad said. "We played 30 minutes with one of the best teams in the state."

The win clinched a 4A state berth for Colony.

"The girls have had a great year," Knights head coach Tom Lincoln said. "We're ecstatic that we're going to state. That's huge for us."

Missing open shots was the difference in the game, Rustad said. But Kenai never gave up, she said.

"For 30 minutes, we played as well as Kenai could play," Rustad said. "We couldn't be more proud with our effort. It just wasn't meant to be."

Fourth-quarter free throws propelled the Knights to victory. Colony went 7-of-9 from the line in the fourth. The Knights were just 5-of-12 in the first three quarters.

"We hit our free throws," Lincoln said. "When it counted, we made them."

Klapperich and Alyssa Hutchins paced the Knights with nine points each. Raquel Young led Kenai with nine. Lexi Beeson chipped in seven.
