Oilers sign Oregon State lefty
The Oilers have signed left-handed pitcher and outfielder Jake Postlewait of Oregon State University.
Postlewait is from Newport, Ore., and is studying forest management at the Pac-10 school. The 6-foot reliever has appeared in over half of the Beavers' 15 games to date.
Rice University outfielder and designated hitter Chris Kolkhorst recently was named the Western Athletic Conference's Player of the Week. The prospective 2002 Oiler is hitting .365 on the season for the Owls. The sophomore was the third consecutive player from Rice to win weekly WAC honors, following former Oilers Mike Lorsbach (outfielder, 2001) and Philip Tribe (pitcher, 2000).
Pitcher Cal Eldred (Oilers 1988) recently donated $245,000 to the University of Iowa to install lights at Duane Banks Field. The Hawkeyes will play their first home night game on April 10.
Eldred, a member of the 2001 Chicago White Sox, is an 11-year major league veteran. Eldred has suffered a number of injuries over the past several seasons and the White Sox chose not to pick up his option for 2002, making him a free agent.
Oilers Corner is provided during the off-season by Mike Baxter, the baseball operations manager for the Alaska Baseball League team.
