Former Kenai Central High School teacher and coach Cliff Massie will be honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Alaska School Activities Association tonight at Kenai Central High School.
The awards ceremony will take place at about 5:30 p.m., immediately before the Northern Lights Conference tournament game between the Kenai Central boys and Kodiak. ASAA’s John Andrews will be on hand to present the award.
Kenai Central boys coach Jim Beeson is encouraging former players, students or colleagues of Massie to be present for the award.
According to former Kenai Central teacher and basketball coach Craig Jung, Massie came to Kenai Central in the late 1960s and retired in the late 1980s.
Massie taught physical education and driver’s education at Kenai Central. He also coached numerous sports, served as athletic director and was one of the founding fathers of the Kenai Peninsula School Activities Association.
Massie also served on the school board and the Kenai City Council. This past summer, the 38-year Kenai resident resigned from the city council due to health reasons.
“He’s like my Alaskan father,” Beeson said. “This is probably going to be a little emotional. He’s coached the kids we have on the team right now.”
