Company agrees to buy Wards Cove Naknek plant

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A Seattle-based company has agreed to buy the Wards Cove Packing Co. cannery in Naknek.

Yardarm Knot operates fishing and processing vessels in the Alaska crab, salmon, pollock and herring fisheries. It has operated in Bristol Bay since 1986.

Alan Chaffee, company president, says Wards Cove's Red Salmon Cannery in Naknek is a natural fit for the company.

''We expect to provide a market to both our traditional fleet of Bristol Bay fishermen as well as those who had previously sold to Wards Cove,'' Chaffee said.

Chaffee says the company has hired William Brindle, the former Red Salmon Cannery plant superintendent from 1998 to 2000.

The cannery will be operated during the 2003 Bristol Bay fishery.

Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
