The Cook Inlet Academy girls and boys basketball teams, both seeded second, suffered upsets on Thursday at the Peninsula Conference basketball tournament in Homer.

The CIA girls dropped a 36-33 decision to Seldovia, the third seed at the tournament. Seldovia advances to the girls championship game at 9:15 p.m. today, while CIA will play Nikolaevsk at 11:30 a.m. in the second-place bracket. The Eagles can still come back and earn second, and thus a state berth, at the tournament.

Seldovia had a 30-22 lead entering the final eight minutes and a Eagles comeback bid came up just short. Both teams had a tough night from the free-throw line, with CIA shooting 13-of-25 and Seldovia shooting 11-of-21.

CIA’s Brooke Forsi led all scorers with 17 points, including nine in the final quarter to fuel the comeback attempt. Jennifer Giles had 16 points to lead Seldovia.

The CIA boys got into a scoring contest with Ninilchik, the No. 3 seed, and couldn’t keep up in absorbing an 87-53 loss.

Ninilchik advances to the championship game at 7:30 p.m. today while the Eagles play in the second-place bracket at 8 a.m. against Lumen Christi. CIA can still go to state by winning the second-place bracket.

CIA and Ninilchik were tied after one quarter at 19, but the Eagles then cooled off while Ninilchik showed it was only getting starting, getting 25 points in the second quarter, 20 in the third quarter and 24 in the fourth quarter.

Austin Vanderford had 29 points for Ninilchik, which finished 15 of 15 from the foul line. Brandon Nobles had 22 points for the Wolverines, while Dan Roderick added 11. For CIA, Scott Litchfield had 20 points and Shane Moffis had 12 points.
